Recently i wanted to try doing black and white photography to see what type of mood can be represented by only a few shades. These are some of the shots i took and i went with the theme of industrial workings in a city.
Sometimes finding interest is about the everyday little things that surround you. This is a transmission tower that supplies power to my neighborhood. Some say it contributes to visual pollution; others say that it is a consequence of civil progress.
This is what all those power lines are for. Cities need electricity.
Places need industry. I thought this photo really contrasts the financial high rise buildings with the industrial cement towers really well.
Here are some more power lines that follow streets throughout almost every city. Not sure, just look up next time you walk down a busy inner-city street.

WOW! I am sure you know but you are a great photographer. I just got a rebel T3i and I have been reading all I can to figure out how to use it. So far most of my “good” shots have been by pushing buttons and changing the dial. In other words they are great accidents.

Great Shots! Love the contrast of textures, color, and even mood. You know some scenes just seem cluttered in color, not much beauty to the eye. Thus, I would say, trying black and white is a great thing to do for those types of areas. Like the one you took of the cement buildings versus the highrise, that would almost be overwhelming in color! But in B/W, it’s got lots of subtle contrast and draws one in, without making one feel overwhelmed by all they are seeing. Thanks for sharing!

Yes i originally shot in colour then i edited them to be black and white after.

Beautiful images. There is a strange beauty to industrial landscapes that b&w brings out really well. I’ll stick to the countryside though! 🙂

You’ve inspired me. I am going to post some black and white photos I took soon. I am trying to figure out the wordpress thing and don’t want to drive anyone crazy with daily posts. 😛
Oh and in college I took a photography course. I’ve forgotten everything but I once had an assignment where I had to take a picture of “beauty.” I snapped tons of pics but turned in a photo of a telephone pole and power lines. The professor asked me why I thought of this as beauty. I remember not giving a great explanation. I just said it just was beautiful. He replied “I was going to give you an A if you had a good explanation but since you don’t you get a B.” I was fine with a B!!!!

It really is funny to think that we have the ability to produce so many colours but b & w always captures the mood better I feel.
